J.D. PLACED DAVID’S SWING where he could keep an eye on the boy and still tinker with his grandmother’s car. As long as David had something cold to chew on, he was a pretty happy camper.

Changing the oil would only take a few minutes, but he hadn’t felt like working on the car after his discussion with Maggie the previous night.

She’d seriously disturbed his equilibrium, making him think about dreams and miracles and all the hokey stuff he’d stopped believing years ago.

But her enthusiasm engaged him and he didn’t want to be engaged, darn it. He had enough on his plate keeping the McGuire family from going up in flames without adding more complications.

Turning to David, he asked, “So are you going to enlighten me on what makes women tick?”

The baby merely kicked his feet and gnawed on a plastic pretzel.

“You don’t have any idea, either, do you?” J.D. shook his head. “I didn’t think so. It has something to do with the whole double X-chromosome thing.”

It didn’t take long for J.D. to change the oil and filter, though he had to stop twice when David dropped his teething toy and started to cry.

J.D. rummaged around in the cubby on his workbench where he kept the notebook for recording mileage—he’d input the data in his computer later. Frowning, he double-checked the odometer. He found it hard to believe his grandmother had been out driving again when he made every effort to take her wherever she needed to go.

He shrugged, tucking the notebook in his back pocket. “Maybe she loaned the car to one of her friends.”

David smiled in agreement.

“Come on, kid, we better get you some lunch.”
